Heart of Maui

Documentary

Role: Colorist

Synopsis:
This short National Park Service documentary film follows two biologists working to save rare and endemic forest birds in Haleakalā National Park. From the mauka (mountains) to makai (sea), beautiful forest birds once cover the entire island, but after an invasive species of mosquito decimated the population only a small group of honeycreepers exist at the higher elevations in Haleakalā.

With this hard to access rainforest as a backdrop, Erika and Chris uncover what technology could help restore native populations of birds and show what would be lost if humans fail to act and prevent the bird’s extinction.

CASE STUDY

This was a beautiful project to work on! The Director/DP was very collaborative and it was a wonderful experience.

This was a fun segment to work on. We wanted to invert the color to feel more like a microscope perspective, with some separation in the individual color channels to feel like you’re looking through multiple layers of glass.

We wanted the interview and close-ups of the people’s faces to feel soft and yet keep them the focus of the image.

I really enjoyed this one…it doesn’t hurt that the footage was filmed in Hawaii. 🙂
